It has been a while since I have written about a Carlton Draught ad but thankfully Clemenger BBDO, Melbourne, has released the above beaut. The spot features some great slo mo footage of people at a pub on a night out, as well as a stunning Pavarotti style musical track. Enjoy.
Old Mac Daddy is a new luxury trailer park style hotel based in a beautiful corner of the Elgin Valley about an hour outside Cape Town. As a global supporter of contemporary art and design Grolsch chose to be one of the 10 designers to makeover one of the luxury 1940’s Airstream caravans and have christened it Metalmorphosis. The Grolsch airstreams unique features consist of a number of innovative magnetic elements including a 360-degree magnetic puzzle which doubles as wallpaper, a clock which tells time through the movement of iron fillings pulled by magnets; and a life-sized pin wall, handmade with over 40 000 metal pins. The Airstream is also fully air-conditioned with a fully kitted bathroom adjoined and houses a queen size bed. I just wish they supplied a few cases of Grolsch when they rent it out. Grolsch also set up a unique bar on the premises with Grolsch on tap (one of a few bars to sell draught Grolsch in South Africa, again though no news on free yummy beer if your staying in the Metalmorphosis Airstream) To try it out for yourself just go to www.oldmacdaddy.co.za and make a booking (its a bargain at R475 per night at the moment) Congrats to Coley Porter Bell (part of the Ogilvy group) and Rotem Schachar for the stunning design.
BrewDog has just produced one of the worlds most expensive, and strongest beers called “The End Of History”. The fine Scottish ale is 55% Alcohol and comes bottled complete in a taxidermied rodent (choose from stuffed stoat or grey squirrel. See pictures below !). If you want to stand out from the crowd this is one way of doing it. BrewDog describe themselves as “A beacon of non-conformity in a increasingly monotone corporate desert”. They certainly nailed the non conformity with this above promo clip for their new crazy beer. Please let me know if anyone has tried this, as at £500 per bottle I’m intrigued to find out if it tastes like beer heaven.
Fun work and good timing from Grey for Heineken beer. This one tells the slightly make believe story of how the Makarapa was born. It was shot by Cape Town legends; Velocity Films. The Makarapa is a type of modified hard hat that is worn as an essential South African football accessory along with the traditional blowing of the Vuvuzela. The myth is that they were fist invented when a chap called Baloyi saw friends being hurt by flying objects in local football stadiums and so customised a hard hat for protection and fan style. If your wondering who Baloyi is, its him in the advert !
Although I’m not the biggest fan of Budweiser beer, I do really like what they are doing with their cash for the World Cup. Budweiser is the official beer of the games, and together with DDB they have created an online reality show called “Bud House”. For the duration of the Football tournament they will film the highs and lows of 32 football fans each bought in to the Bud House (in Cape Town) and representing one of the different countries that qualified for the tournament.. As the world cup proceeds and teams get kicked out, so will the relevant people representing the teams in the Bud House. The winner of the competition will be a player from the matching World Cup winning country, and he / she will get to present the Budweiser man of the match prize at the final in soccer city, Johannesburg. Each day the dedicated YouTube channel will be updated with new clips of the goings on in the Bud House, and each football fan will be updating their dedicated Fan Pages. So far, Budweiser have had close to 1 million visitors on the site and after watching a bit of it I would imagine this is going to work nicely.
So good to see Peter Kay back doing John Smith’s commercials again. In this latest instalment by TBWA, London, Peter gets asked by his better half who he would choose if he could sleep with anyone in the world. If you missed the original classic John Smith’s ads staring Peter Kay, just click here.
Normally I’m a huge fan of the Carlsberg commercials but this latest one for the England Football team entitled “Team Talk” falls a little short for me. Nice to see so many famous people though and must have taken some doing so thought I would share it non the less. Credit to Saatchi & Saatchi, London.
Interesting approach from Coca Cola South America. They decided to use Augmented Reality Tags on the bottles to show consumers their new TV ad 2 weeks in advance. I’m impressed the agency got this through as I know how hard it can be to convince big brands to take a chance, but I fear somewhere down the line they were told to reign in their creativity. If a brand like Coca Cola is willing to give AR a go, why not go large ? off the top of my head some sort of happiness factory game with random prizes would have been nice, or at least use some 3D graphics rather than a plain TV ad.
