Thanks to Aslam Levy from Cape Town Tourism I had the pleasure of taking a VIP tour of Cape Town’s new 2010 World Cup Green Point stadium. Legend Matt Buckland joined me for the tour as well as local CT hero’s Gaby Rosario and Lindi King. Personally I think the Green Point stadium will become one of the worlds best, not due to its capacity but because of its architecture and idyllic placing in one of the worlds most beautiful cities. If the local Western Provence / Stormers rugby team doesn’t make this their new home stadium I will be amazed ( and they will be foolish). To find out more about the stadium and to book tours go to www.greenpointstadiumvc.co.za. Green Point Stadium Facts
- The Stadium will cost approx R4.5 billion
- Green Point Stadium is due for completion by mid December 2009.
- Capacity will be 68,000 for the 2010 world cup (55,000 after the world cup)
- Basement parking for 1200 cars
- 16 lifts throughout the stadium
- 250 VIP suits
- Stadium footprint is equivalent to six city blocks, 50m tall, 15 storey building
- Design uses natural light for ambience and to save energy; the façade is covered with an open mesh fabric that plays with natural light
- The roof acts as acoustic dampening to make the stadium ideal for music concerts

This new giant touch wall installation from Schematic for the 2009 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival has blown my mind. The interactive screen is multi-touch and multi-user capable and can even authenticate users via their Cannes RFID badges. The above video features Trevor Kaufman CEO of Schematic and other employees talking you through the many innovative features. The list of future uses for this type of technology could be incredible e.g. city info boards, cinema tickets and review boards, University timetables/projects/maps, airport info/tickets, instant social networking boards, etc etc (feel free to ad any you think of in the comments) Key features of the Schematic Cannes board:
- Interactive maps
- RFID badge recognition
- Schedules
- Share contact details
- Find people
- Get Info & reviews on local bars/restaurants
Click here to download the Schematic touch wall press release On another note the Schematic website is in my mind amasingly fantastic, just the right balance between design, innovation and ease of use. Click here to check it out for yourself. What an incredible company ! .

Another gratuitous half naked girl action ad for American burger joint Carls Jr. This one features Audrina Patridge looking very agreeable in a gold lamé bikini, advertising the new Carls Jr. Teriyaki Burger. The ad was shot on the beach in Malibu and was created by Mendelsohn Zien advertising. To watch the making of the video click here Previous Oscar/Cannes/Golden Globe winning hot girl action ads for Carls Jr consist of the following:
(Just click the above links to watch the relevant full directors cut version of the ads) My favourite is still the original Paris Hilton ad, although any of them are still welcome to ask me out anytime, call me.

I am a long time fan of Australian beer marketing, they always push the boundaries a little more than in other countries and generally come up with new, fun and interesting campaigns.
Tooheys extra dry beer recently launched a great campaign by BMF, Sydney. To test the theory of “6 degrees of separation”, four aspiring Australian’s were hand picked and sent a box containing a 6 pack of Tooheys beer and $12,000. Each contestant picked a hero of theirs and had 18 days to travel the world and meet their hero. The challenge was to share the beers with a series of Key people, and ultimately connect with their hero for the last one (so proving the theory of 6 degrees/beers of separation)
The participants were filmed along the way and the footage was made into an online reality show. They travelled over 150,000km between them, logging over 167 hours of footage in 15 cities across three continents.
For the campaign the footage was shared on a dedicated YouTube page as well as an main branded 6beersofseperation.com website (created by Holler, Sydney) .
Viewers could comment and track individual contestants as well as subscribe for updates and send the campaign to friends. To watch all the 6 beers of separation episodes click here (or visit the main site to download the feature film, its 1.07GB so be careful with bandwidth if you’re near your cap)

Great ad for the recently released Palm Pre phone. The spot was created by Boston ad agency Modernista (very interesting agency site). The sleek spots were shot in China and feature choreography directed by Sun Yupeng, who helped create the opening ceremonies for the Olympics in Beijing last summer.
For the making of the Palm Pre ad click here. (they used 1000 real performers for the spot)

Fantastic work for Brazilian job website www.dreamjob.com.br. The ad was the brainchild of local Brazilian agency Borghierh / Lowe (who have a pretty annoying website). Either way great work and I’m defiantly keen to take that mans position.

Great campaign by the fab guys and girls at King James for Allan Gray investment bank. The billboard took months to make and is made up of 900 individual quilt panels !. The Billboard can be seen in person at Cape Town International airport. I have always had a soft spot for the Allan Gray ads by King James. Take a look at the other two older billboards below also featuring a patience theme. Just to cap it off you have to love their TV spot for the same company, best investment bank ad I have ever seen. (click here to view their agency blog)

Great spot by Y&R for Bacardi featuring a fantastic song called Daylight by Matt and Kim (click here to download the Daylight song for free !) The ad shows a guy walking back through time, ending up at a bar ordering a mojito with the tagline “Since 1862, the best mojitos have always been made the same way”. Must have worked as I want a mojito now.

Great piece of innovative work by Vodafone UK utilising the power of twitter and Google maps. In order to promote Vodacom’s scrapping of European roaming charges (i.e. make calls in most European countries for the same cost as back home), Vodacom have released a website where people can tweet their summer holiday plans. The tweets will show up and aggregate on a customised Vodacom Google map page (as shown above). To participate all that people need to do is tweet the hashtag #ukhols, your age, sex, the first half of your postcode and where you are going this year (e.g. #ukhols 25 F B12 Gran Canaria). If you don’t want to give your age and sex, just tweet the hashtag #ukhols, the first half of your postcode, and your destination (e.g. #ukhols NW11 Ibiza). The tweets only take a few minutes to show up on the map and there is also a live twitter stream of people using the #ukhols hashtag. Great work and will be interesting to see how popular it becomes, early signs look good. The site was developed by Ben Marsh (you can contact him here), and it uses the Twitter Search API, the Google Maps API, the Yahoo Placemaker API and a large helping of jQuery. To take a look for yourself go visit www.ukholsmap.com.
