ebay wicked sick BMX: The real story exposed

When this ad for a “Wicked Sick BMX” was listed on ebay earlier this year, the worlds blogosphere and twitter etc were quick to pick up on the brilliant copy used for the ad.

Now it has emerged that the ad was the work of an Aussie creative team at George Patterson Y&R. The guys from GPYR bought a BMX on ebay and relisted it with some creativity and it sold for 5 times the purchase price catching everyone’s attention in the process!!

The project was called The Wicked Sick Project and according to this video it was a test to see how much difference creativity makes !

Many of the worlds most popular blogs covered the story including local site, 2 Oceans Vibe who just so happens to have a nice pic of the original ebay ad here.

  1. I’d just like to say that regardless of whether or not this is creativity, legitimate or awesome…which it is…I can vouch that it works.

I tried selling my car with a very basic post to Twitter “VW polo for sale R109’000”…then I remembered the wicked sick BMX project and decided to re-write my ad a little differently. You can read the post here (http://riccwebb.posterous.com/the-story-of-riccwebb-and-sophiathe-vw-polo)
Basically, within 30min of putting up the “new/awesome” story, I managed to sell my car, after having no responses at all during the first week of having the original story up.

Thanks guys, your inspiration helped me get rid of the only thing keeping me back from leaving South Africa.
